Wide Awake comes from Perry’s re-released Teenage Dream album and it’s not hard to see where the lyrics have been inspired from.

The song was apparently written specifically for the upcoming Part of Me movie and is a mid-tempo track. It showcases Perry’s gentler side that we’ve seen in other songs and could possibly be the most personal to date. With Perry’s vocals taking the lead surrounded by the echoed lyrics I’m wide Awake, the rest of the instrumentation blends beautifully, not being too overpowering or distracting from the vocals.

Beautiful track though sitting on the fence whether it wake up the charts

If you haven’t heard of Smash yet, let us give you a brief introduction to it. It’s a musical drama that revolves round a new Broadway production based on life of Marilyn Monroe. Or as we’ve fondly started calling it, the adult Glee. It’s only been showing for 6 weeks on Sky Atlantic but already the soundtrack to the show is available to buy.

Well, we call it the soundtrack to the show, but honestly, there’s so much that could have been done with this album. What you get in this little package is 8 cover versions (Touch Me, Stand, Who You Are, Crazy Dreams, Beautiful, Haven’t Met You Yet, Shake It Out & Brighter Than The Sun) which actually are done very well and whilst making them their own, the artists maintain the original feel. Our personal favourites have to be their take on Jessie J’s Who You Are and Florance & The Machine’s Shake It Out

The remaining 5 tracks on the album are from the ‘Broadway production’ we see being bought together on the show and original tracks written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.. These include Let Me Be Your Star (that closed the pilot episode), The 20th Century Foz Mambo, Mr & Mrs Smith, Let’s Be Bad & History Is Made At Night

Honestly there probably was a lot more that could have been done with the album in that you could have had a CD of the cover versions (which we do reckon that there will be more of and that we know there has been so far) and then the songs from the ‘musical’ on another. Maybe it could still happen, who knows. Or maybe it’s going to end up like Glee did releasing album after album of songs.

If you’re truly a fan of the show and want to relive the musical moments, then by all means buy it. Otherwise, just wait and see what happens by the time the end of the season occurs.

Kylie // Timebomb

Can you believe that it’s been 25 years since Kylie started in the music business? Not many artists these days can say that. But in keeping with the 25 year theme, new single Timebomb was released on the 25th May.

She seems to have her finger on the pulse as the song fits with what is out there at the moment whilst still retaining that Kylie edge to it. It’s a electro pop tune that in some instances would fit around the time that Can’t Get You Out Of My Head came out. Everything works here. It’s balance between the vocals and music is done perfect so that even in the sections where the vocals are louder than the music, you can still hear both parts.

With a Best of Kylie Minogue album out on the 4th June, fans probably think that this is a promo for it. Sadly looking at the track listing, it seems that this is a stand alone track, but could be seen as Kylie showing she doesn’t plan to back down yet.

Cheryl // Call My Name

It’s been a while since Cheryl (no Cole) has had anything out  and she’s been very quiet too. Too quiet probably some people would say. Well, ahead of her new album, A Million Lights we have new single, Call My Name.

So it seems that electronic dancy tracks seem to be the order at the moment. Once again, we’ve got another generic track. It feels repetitive; the chorus itself is sung twice each time and the verses appear to follow the same syllable format.  Add to that the digital wizardry on her vocals…

Cheryl fans will be rejoicing whilst others will be groaning.

Special Review: Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Baku

Yes it’s been that time of year where you’re allowed one night of cheesy music. Yes we do refer to the Eurovision Song Contest that came live from the Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. The 26 finalists (21 of which had to go through semi-final events first to secure their places in the finals out of the remaining 27 eligible countries. The United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Italy automatically get entry due to the amount of money put into the EBU.) took the stage in what ended up being longer than the 3 hours viewers were advised (thank God for munchies!)

So of course, as has been for a few years now, the winning song has been performed at the start of the show. Which is actually a good thing because we struggled to remember what the 2011 winning song was (apparently it was called Running Scared…we still don’t remember it…). So after going through the usual welcoming info and explaination on how the voting worked, we we into the show. Here follows our views on each of the tracks as they were performed (country/song title / artist)…..

United Kingdom: Love Will Set You Free // Engelbert Humperdinck
To be fair, the UK don’t get a say these days in who goes to represent us and people reactions varied to sending the 75 year old crooner. Maybe they thought sending someone like him would secure the votes…It didn’t. To be honest, to open the contest, you should be opening with bright party tune that we know Eurovision produces. No, we had a ballad that sadly left us feeling like we wanted to slit our wrists too. Did appear to fail to hit a note too and that wouldn’t go without notice.

Hungary: Sound of Our Hearts // Compact Disco
Let’s not drag this out, didn’t have us enthralled

Albania: Suus // Rona Nishliu
Sounded like something possessed (or as Graham Norton, the BBC commentator said, once she had her medicine there wouldn’t be another performance like that). Did think at one point her head and shoulders had been supposed on another body.

Bosnia & Herzegovina: Korake Ti Znam // Maya Sar
It was looking good while she sat on at the piano, even if she did look a little like Lady Gaga. But once she rose from the piano, it just lost the momentum.

Russia: Party For Everybody // Buranovskiye Babushki (Buranovo Grannies)
Everybody seemed to be talking about the grannies from Buranovo in Russia. The honest truth was that they were showing that age is not a barrier in this competition. You know that someone somewhere is going to put a dance to this and that it's going to be a summer hit like the Macreena...Their goal was to be able to rebuilt a church in their town that had been pulled down by Stallin...Someone start a fund and getting paying in, they deserve it!

Iceland: Never Forget // Greta Salóme & Jónsi
Personally, we could hear a bit of celtic influence to it though, their song Never Forgot sounded like it belonged in a show or a film soundtrack. Then Greta playing the violin with a smile that we swear was being remotely controlled…she smiled like a barbie doll!

Cyprus: La La Love // Ivi Adamou
La La Love had all the elements of a great Eurovision europop tracks with a great beat to dance to and a chorus that you were soon singing along to. Rated as one of our favourites.

France: Echo (You And I) // Anggun
So we've found the French Male Gymnastics team...they were with Anggun in Echo (You And I). The opening lulled us into thinking we were getting a mid-tempo track before they sped it up. To be honest, we paying more attention to the gymnasts...

Italy: L’Amore E’ Femmina (Out Of Love) // Nina Zilli
No disrepect, but it seemed that Amy winehouse had been returned in Nina Zilli with her track L'Amore E' Femmina (Out Of Love). Al she needed was a beehive bonnet...

Estonia: Kuula // Ott Lepland
Kuula (or Listen (thank you karaoke on the red button on BBC)) was a beautiful ballad performed by Ott Lepland. Enough said!

Norway: Stay // Tooji
Initially we'd be forgiven for thinking he looked a bit like Basshunter...except BH is Swedish and we know that he was *apparently* in Kilmarnock & Dunfermilne on Saturday. Another little great dance tune that Euovision has been known for.

Azerbaijan: When the Music Dies // Sabina Babayeva
The host countries entry was a slow ballad almost like an Alicia Keys number.

Romania: Zaleilah // Mandinga
It had to get the Scottish vote....It had pipes, it had an accordian, it had the lot of them doing simple dance moves. And it was a catchy song, we don't care if we understand the language or not lol.

Denmark: Should’ve Known Better // Soluna Samay
Appearing to have raided Chery Cole's wardrobe for her Fight For This Love video outfit, Soluna Samay's track was an alright pop track (but sorry Denmark, The Oslen Brother's track Fly On The Wings Of Love is still our favourite!)

Greece: Aphrodisiac // Eleftheria Eleftheriou
A country told not to win the Eurovision due the costs of hosting the show, which was probably why it looked and sounded like their singer Eleftheria Eleftheriou was miming. Sad, Aphrodisiac had Eurovision hit written all over it...

Sweden: Euphoria // Loreen
It's been no.1 in a few countries turns out that it's been available on iTunes for a while (opps!) Still, it was just Loreen and a dance routine that for most of it was just her. There is something that we don't mind hearing about this...might look more into this for a later review....

Turkey: Love Me Back // Can Bonomo
At our party two of us couldn't help thinking this track belonged in a panto and how, even though we didn't like the original singer here, how another performer could make this sound good....

Spain: Quédate Conmigo (Stay With Me) // Pastora Soler
We felt sorry for Pastora Soler (or the Spanish Celine Dion as was nicknamed at our party) as apparently they too were instructed not to win because of costs to host the event. Still, it was a great song with a great performer who could sing.

Germany: Standing Still // Roman Lob
Caused some hilarity at our party with him singing the chorus lyrics I'm standing still/I'm standing still/As you leave me now walking around the stage...emmm…

Malta: This Is The Night // Kurt Calleja
Okay, we were supporting Malta we admit. Our party have all been to Malta on various occasions,and normally they do produce a decent entry. And this year it was no different...maybe they could take Tonight's The Night over there and have this as their opening song....

F.R.Y Macadonia: Crno I Belo // Kaliopi
Norton commented that the singer Kaliopi had dropped her surname Grill for her career and that it had been a good thing as it made her sound like a restaurant. Song was good but then they brought it europop elements that ruined her voice.

Ireland: Waterline // Jedward
There was two issue with them to start with. One, we've found some missing Starlight Express outfits and two, they obviously forgot to put their fingers in the electric sockets to get their trademark hair. Again, it felt like the backing singers were doing more than the boys. They can't sing & dance at the same time…when will they learn?

Serbia: Nije Ljubav Stvar // Zeljko Joksimovic
A beautiful simple produced song that didn't rely on big instruments but kept it to a tried and tested method of building it to a climax for the finale (though their entry that won a few years ago, Prayer is still a favourite)

Ukraine: Be My Guest // Gaitana
Another dancy, electronic tune that we thought really should have been the opening to the show as a 'welcome'. Probably need a bit of work in some sections. Otherwise, an alright tune.

Moldova: Lautar // Pasha Parfeny
Sounding like it could have been pulled from The Artist soundtrack, it had a good beat for feet tapping, finger clicking and hand clapping. Although we do wonder if his trumpet is a euphemism for something else...great song to end the show

So there was the 15 minutes for the televoting (shame that the UK can’t vote by text…would be much easier!) which forms 50% of the country vote, the other 50% being decided by a panel of judges from each country. We still have no idea who it was who was performing during the counting stage. Anyway, it was onto the results. Now no matter how the EBU have tried to making the voting fairer, politics still play a part in the voting. You can tell with neighbours still voting for neighbours. As the night went on it seemed to be going between Sweden and Russia. (and some surprises along the way). In the end though, it was Sweden that came out on top with their track Euphoria. And the UK? Second to bottom…Maybe the public should decide who goes to Eurovision once again. Then they can’t blame anyone… So it off to Sweden next year (unsure whether we headed for the capital or somewhere else)

Scottish singer/songwriter Sandi Thom returns later this year (27th August to be exact) with her forth studio album, Flesh & Blood. Coldplay // Princess of China feat. Rihanna

This is probably a match up that no one might have expected. But yes Coldplay are dueting with Rihanna on this track from their album Mylo Xyloto.

Princess of China has a very familiar feel to it melody wise (we think it sounds similar to Paradise) with a oriental feel being brought in by the vocals and lyrics. And talking about the vocals, it seems that when it comes down to singing together, Chris Martin ends up sounding more of a backing singer to the Bajan. Still, it doesn’t sound too bad all things considered.

Should be interesting to see how this does in the charts.

Aiden Grimshaw // Is This Love

We couldn’t forget about 2010 X-factor contestant Aiden Grimshaw even if we wanted to…mainly because we remember him being only having one non-emotional face during performances. Two years on, he’s ready to release his debut, self penned single, Is This Love.

It has a very dark feel to it probably owing to the main electronica feel of the track, with the occasional drum & bass being added for good measure. However it is maybe a track that a minority rather than a majority will take to their hearts. Occasionally play in between other tracks wouldn’t go a miss but not something that in the long term we could be bear.

The debut solo release from Tulisa Contostavlos (thankfully just as Tulisa!) comes in the form of Young

A dancey little number that wouldn’t sound wrong in the Med clubs over the summer season, yes it does the job of saying here I am, I’m solo, but maybe not with the impact that is expected. Maybe we expected some a bit fiercer but what we get is a domesticated cat. In saying that, we do prefer this over the recent releases from a certain other artist who’s gone all dancey.

Hopefully she’ll take her own lyrics and learn for her mistakes and give us something with a little more bite next time round

The Wanted // Chasing The Sun

We’ve sort of felt that The Wanted have been sort of hit or miss with us. Their latest offering comes in the form of Chasing The Sun.

The song was written and produced by Example, which on hearing you can probably tell it has that sort of Example feel to it. It’s the vocals that really do provide more of a melody to this with it being generic synths and beats, but it somehow works. Yet we can help but feel that the repetitive oh oh oh oh does seem dragged out in the choruses, almost like it was a tag like insert something here later and then has been forgotten to be altered.

It’s a nice little track that itself would probably have people up dancing, but there’s also this little nagging voice telling us that the boys have done better in the past….Maybe it’s all that American sun that affecting the track….

New Music Friday // Gary Barlow & The Commonwealth Band

It seems that every where is going Jubilee mad this year! And now we have another commerative album on the horizon. The title track, Sing was written by Gary Barlow & Andrew Lloyd Webber and features The Military Wives and other artists from across the commonwealth. Also on the album is New Zealander Hayley Westenra as well as Britain’s very own Alfie Boe & Laura Wright.

Jennifer Lopez // Dance Again Feat. Pitbull

It’s been a while since we heard anything from Jlo although we are still dancing away to the Spanish version of On The Floor (or in Spanish Ven A Bailar) although we did like the Fiat ad with Papi. Anyhow, she’s now back with her new single, Dance Again and, once again, it features Mr. Worldwide himself, Pitbull.

It’s melody feels familiar and might have something to do with the fact that it the same producer as On The Floor (RedOne). But lyrically it just feels very generic and very repetitive. Not even having Pitbull on the track is making us fall for it. There’s a sparkle missing from it that we kept waiting to appear. If we compared On The Floor and this track together, then On The Floor would probably win.

It’s an okay song, but it’s likely to become irritating if over played. What we’d like to know is if there is a Spanish version…

Vanquish // The Harder You Love

Bee, Holly, Lizzy & Rianna. Individually the names may mean nothing but collectively these girls are known as Vanquish. Their first offering to general public comes in the form of The Harder You Love.

Their style is described as ‘power pop’ although sadly when we hear this, we can only think cheesy pop for this offering. You’d almost be forgiven to think that this was from the reject pile of the early days of The Saturdays or even Eurovision! It’s a shame too as we think that the girls are able to perform but this song just doesn’t do anything for them.

Hopefully we’ll get to hear something from them that can really show us who they are and what they can do.

Paloma Faith // Picking Up The Pieces

We can’t remember the last time we heard anything from Paloma Faith but now she’s back with her new tune, Picking Up The Pieces.

The track is what we can only describe as a quick paced ballad. It’s a nice balance between vocals and music, each complementing the other. Vocally the song flows up and down with some great held notes, full of vibrant colours. Song seems to follow what is on trend at the moment in the tracks whilst maintaining what make her her.

When She Was Mine is the debut release for the four piece guitar playing group known as Lawson. But with the likes of The Wanted, JLS and of course, One Direction around at the moment, is there a space for them in the music scene?

The answer quite simply is yes. It’s a great little song that getting quite a bit of airplay. In some instances it got us thinking of McFly’s debut, maybe not as many guitar rifts, as it but still, it’s rocking little tune. We can’t seem to find any flaws. The music matches the vocals, not something you can always say for a debut.

Strong debut song from the guys but hopefully they’ve not played all their cards just to get the attention. Hopefully they’ve still got the aces stacked up their sleeves.

Callaghan // Life In Full Colour

We think he can hear the Hallelujah chorus with the release of this of album. It’s been a long time coming and we’ve been patiently awaiting for….well, quite a while!  And the album doesn’t disappoint.

The album opens with the last single that Callaghan released, the bright and bouncy Best Year which in essence documents her packing up from dreary old England and heading across pond to work with musician & producer Shawn Mullins. To Be Loved By You is a rocky little number that takes you a little by surprise after such a gentle opening. Slowing down, we’re brought into the slow & emotional track Nothing You Say.

It Was Meant To Be is a beautiful ballad initially driven by piano and a beautiful finger picked guitar but joined with drums that compliment what’s already there. Coming next is a slightly uptempo with a bit of a rocky edge is Close My Eyes followed by a lovely summer driving song, Sweet Surrender.

Next we have the first solo release single Look Around, that opens with what sounds like an organ, before adding piano, guitar and drums in a nice progression. Now we get a nice guitar driven track called The Only Thing Real that features Shawn Mullins and all we can say is that their vocals are suited and compliment one another. Another slow number, and once again, guitar driven with another beautiful finger picking style is Get Me Through Tonight.

The warm and vibrant Smile plays after followed by a lovely laid back The Edge Of Love. Bringing the album to a close is If Only For Tonight, that starts off with just piano before bursting into life producing a track that rounds the album off beautifully.

As we said, this is an album that we’ve been waiting for a while but it’s turned out to be more than worth the wait. There’s a beautiful warmth to Callaghan’s voice that conveys the emotion of the songs.The tracks showcase the wonderful versatility of her voice from a tender ballad to adding amore upbeat almost rocky track (we admit when we heard them first time round we were pleasantly surprised as really we’d only heard sort of ballads before)

Callaghan is one of those artists who has grafted and taken chances. This album is the fruits of those labours. There are songs for all occasions here and it’s perfect for summer driving or just having a laid back day in the house. A big pat on the back is called for and hopefully this is will be the first of many to come.

Conor Maynard // Can’t Say No

We’re pretty sure that this is the first single from Conor Maynard but it’s a welcome relief from what we’ve been hearing recently.

Okay, it’s probably safe to say that it’s probably a sexist song, mainly with him singing girls girls girls I just can’t say no in the chorus. But there is something that draws us into this song. Maybe it’s because it a song that you’d more like hear from the likes Usher or other R&B artist.  The song doesn’t change throughout, yet, this doesn’t bother us mainly because we think that Maynard’s vocals provide enough variation on top of a generic beat.

Enjoyable little number and a great first release

Alexandra Burke // Let It Go

So we thought that we might have seen the last of the Elephant last time round. But it seems not. it seems that there’s been another one unleashed.

Let It Go is another dance track, with a very generic melody. And sadly there’s far more auto-tune and digital altering that is needed. We all know that Burke can sing, but both this and the previous release seems to cheapen that. Once again there’s nothing new here that hasn’t been heard already. It’s starting to feel like she’s playing catch up in the fast paced charts we now have

Jessie J // Laserlight feat. David Guetta

Laserlight is the latest single from Jessie J from her platinum version of her debut album Who You Are.

It features man of the moment, David Guetta. And you can tell from the start that it’s a Guetta track with the whole electronic sound that we’re becoming so familiar with this year. As for Jessie’s vocals, it feels like it’s a little out of her comfort zone with quite a number of high notes. It does feel like it is quite repetitive but this possibly down to the fact that the music overpowers the vocals.

Not the strongest release from the current The Voice UK coach/judge. Previous singles have, sadly, been better.

Scissor Sisters // Only The Horses

Yes, the Scissor Sisters are back with their forthcoming album Magic Hour .Technically Only The Horses is the second release from the album, but we don’t remember hearing much regarding Shady Love so we’ll pretend it didn’t happen.

This track has a very familiar Scissor Sisters feel to it, more than the ‘previous’ release. It’s probably recognisable to the casual listener and is very much there with what else is in the charts at the moment. It’s a great little tune that we wouldn’t mind hearing a bit more on the radio but it’s a great little returning number from the band.

Amy Macdonald // Slow It Down

Slow It Down is the first single to be lifted from the Scottish singer/songwriter third album, Life in A Beautiful Light, due for release here in the UK on the 11th June (8th June for Germany).  Sadly the powers that be have yet to allow the single to be released here in the UK (although it is slotted for release on the 11th June…funny that!), but over in Germany, fans can lay their hands on the physical single.

It’s a 2 track, backed with the album track Human Spirit. But let’s talk about the main track here, Slow It Down. She admits herself that the song is about her being a petrolhead. It’s a driving song that both that will have your foot tapping and come tour time, arms in the air clapping. There are some notes that may take fans by surprise in it, but it shows how far she’s come since the debut back in 2007.

Human Spirit is the second track here and as we said previously, features on the album as well. Inspired by the events surrounding the Chilean miners, the song is full of beautiful strings and contrasting that could be viewed as what was happening with the miners (The world kept going and nobody could see / The hell that was happening, too hard to see / And I'll shed a tear /For you) to how the rest of the world is (And all the while we're still thinking bout ourselves / Worrying bout money and stressing about wealth)

Both are beautiful tracks and show that Amy is still her and that 6 years on that nothing truly has changed for her. The emotion is still there as too the inspiration. Hopefully the rest of Life In A Beautiful Light will live up to expectations.

So another trend this year seems to be in attempting dance tracks. Not that this is anything new for the Saturday girls as some of their previous releases have sort of headed in this direction.

Sadly once again we’re not impressed with the release.  The track itself feels very repetitive with nothing truly showing from it. In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s a very generic song that could be sung by anyone.

No doubt fans will enjoy but not one on the recommendations list to be honest.

Snow Patrol // New York

You never seem to get Snow Patrol the same way and their tracks seem to be rather hit or miss.

Sadly we think that this one is a bit of a miss. Considering the general sound around at the moment seems to be bright and breezy, this is just dull and depressing. It doesn’t seem to go anywhere and seems to drag itself sorrily to the end of the track.

A track that should be put out of it’s misery. Not expecting much from it.

It seems harking back to the good old days of music is definitely on the cards this year, first with Goyte and now with this track from Fun.

It starts off a little like Beautiful South track but when it hits the chorus, it just feels as if it all seems to fall apart. With this slow section and with what seems like out of tune lyrics, you can’t help but feel that this is a bad mash up

Sadly not impressed with this offering that after a while feels like nails of a chalkboard. And sad to say, the Glee version of this track is much better!
