Cheryl // Under The Sun

ch3
Download @ Amazon.co.uk | Download @ iTunes

The second single to be lifted from A Million Lights comes in the form of Under The Sun for Cheryl

Yes it seems to be a nice little summery song that you could imagine listening to just chilling out the back or driving along a long winding road. Sadly, after one verse and chorus, the song seem to drag. The melody never seems to go anywhere and nether does Cheryl’s voice. It almost feels monotone and each syllable accentuated

Is it number 1 single material? We don’t think so but no doubt fans will flock to it.

How can we forget that track We Are Young? Oh that’s right, we can’t seeing since it seems to still be doing the rounds on the radio. But now Fun are ready to release their follow up single, Some Nights.

First off, this is much brighter than their last offering. Opening with an a capella version of the chorus before adding piano and building in other instruments by the end of the first chorus. It’s a hand clapping, foot tapping track that you’ll be glad to hear on the radio.

Given that their the previous offering seems to still be popular,  we fear that this might slip under the radar…Shame cause it really is a good track.

P!nk // Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

Download @ Amazon.co.uk | Download @ iTunes

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Pink (if our mind serves us right it was Perfect back last year). Now she’s back with her new song Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

It’s a song that demands attention from the moment that it begins.  And that’s what you probably want when you’ve not released something for a while. In some instances it reminds us of her track Funhouse. We thought that there might be a misheard lyric contained within (apparently not!), and having heard the radio edit of the track, it’s alright but does sound a little odd at the chorus ( I’ve had a s*** day / Have you had a s*** day? / We had a s*** day).

P!nk is back but only time will tell if this will be as popular as her previous tracks through.

Scissor Sisters // Baby Come Home

Scissor Sisters PNG
Download @ Amazon.co.uk | Download @ iTunes

Depending on how you want to look at this, this is either the 2nd or the 3rd single from the latest studio album, Magic Hour

It’s a good little number with a very familiar Scissor Sisters recipe.  There’s a nice bouncy piano plus a good foot tapping drum line. The song itself flows without much disruption. Near the end there’s a bridge with just a piano and harmonies that work brilliant too. Overall a great little track that harks back to the days of of their previous work

Very much Scissor sisters that will likely appeal to fans and non fans alike

Rita Ora // How We Do (Party)

The second single from Rita Ora (3rd if you include the collaboration with DJ Fresh) comes in the form of How We Do (Party).

This tracks a bit more upbeat than the first (R.I.P) which just seemed to be a dull and going no where track. This on the other hand gives us a chance to hear what Ora can do. With it heading into the ‘summer’ season (or at least we can dream), it’s the perfect track for season as if celebrates being young and fun. And even the clean radio edit works.

Taking Over Me is the second single from the latest British boy band Lawson.

Where When She Was Mine was all about heartbreak (without being a too soppy ballad), Taking Over Me is a great little pop/rock song about being young and falling in love. It the perfect little summer song and will have you joining in with the chorus and the long wooo’s.

So far that’s two out of two for the boys working to get the attention that they deserve. Let’s hope that they keep doing what they are at the moment and give other groups a run for their money.

If you were follow the X Factor last year then you’ll no doubt remember who Misha B is. Having came forth in the show, she’s now released her debut single, called Home Run.

To be honest, we’re not surprised by the style that she gone for on it. It starts as if it’s going to be a nice soul/pop song before heading into a R&B tune. It’s a style that suits her and that she is obviously comfortable with. Then again, after a few listens, we found the radio edit starting to grate on us. We do like the Krazy Kat and Zed Bias remixes though….

Will probably appeal to those that saw her on X Factor, but it’s not doing much for us we’re afraid…

Karmin // Brokenhearted

Download @ Amazon.co.uk | Download @ iTunes

We believe that Brokenhearted is the debut single from Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan otherwise known as Karmin.

You’d be fooled into thinking that it’s going to be a little pop song but come by the end of the first verse, there’s a rap verse inserted just before the chorus, that sort of reminds us of Nicki Minja or Brit girl group Stooshe. The longer the song goes on though, the more we think that it could be another Call Me Maybe that’s going to be stuck in listeners heads for a while.

Will be interesting to see where things go from here….

Oh dear! Maybe Can’t Say No set the bar too high for the follow up single from Conor Maynard.

To be honest, we reckon if you tried hard enough, you could probably fit the words to the debut single into this and that’s probably why only after a couple of listens that we’re already tired of it. There’s nothing new that we didn’t hear the last time round. Would it be too hopeful to wish for something different next time round?

K’naan // Is Anybody Out There feat. Nelly Furtado

516lagbUTrL._SS500_
Buy @ Amazon.co.uk

Okay, we’re going to hold our hands up and say that the only song we can think right off the top of our heads that K’naan has done is Wavin’ Flag (and that’s probably because we heard that often during the World Cup). Anyways, he’s back with his latest offering, this time dueting with Nelly Furtado (another name we’ve not heard in a while)

While Furtado’s vocals are mainly focused on the chorus and eventually the bridge, as you might expect, main vocals fall on K’naan. It’s a great little number with lyrics that people are probably likely to relate to. Possible not a pairing that anyone would think of but it works. Their vocals blend perfectly with neither trying to out do the other. Nice little track for them to come back with and hopefully will be given the attention it deserves.

New Music Friday // Brandon Jones

You might recognise this guy from such series as Lie To Me (Season 3 – Liam) and CSI (Season 12 – Charlie Russell). But now Mr Jones is throwing his hand into music scene. He’s done a few cover songs but the first full song of studio quality is a track called In The Moment featuring Jade Valerie. Check it out below.

Mike & The Mechanics @ O2 Academy Glasgow 27th June 2012

Last year, Mike & The Mechanics released a new album, The Road which featured a new a line up to include Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar alongside Mike Rutherford. We had a great night last year when they came to Glasgow to the Clyde Auditorium though were slightly disheartened at the turn out. This year they' returned to play the O2 Academy in Glasgow.

First of course it was the support act and this came in the form of The Strike Nineteens, a local band from Dumbarton. They performed a number of tracks including our favourite Ashes Of The Fury. They told us that they’d only be contacted 6 days prior to the gig to ask if they’d play and that usually they were a bit louder. It was different and hats off to having another great support act.

Then after a short break, the main act opened. Opening with the classic Beggar On A Beach of Gold it got all those present in the mood for the whole night. This was followed by Get Up which had both Tim and Andrew jumping up and down on the stage. Bringing it back to more recently, they next performed Try To Save Me before taking it back to 1995 for Another Cup Of Coffee.

Mike steps up to the mic to talk about how when he first started touring he just wanted to play Mechanics songs and not do any covers. Well this that has gone out the window as they perform the Genesis song Throwing It All Away, in which the audience were encourage to take part in a call and response singalong by Tim. From one cover to another…sort of, as Andrew performed his song This Generation.

Taking it down a notch, we’re treated to an acoustic set featuring the tracks The Road, A Time and Place, Everybody Gets A Second Chance and Something In The Way. From calm and sedate we’re brought back in an instant to the full production with Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground). A classic from Roachford in the form of his own song, Cuddly Toy before heading into two familiar Genesis hits in Follow You, Follow Me and I Can’t Dance.

Probably one of the most well known tracks by Mike & The Mechanics, The Living Years is next complete with sing along from the audience. The final track to be performed is All I Need Is A Miracle before the band leave the stage. Of course, like any good group it’s not the last track and their back for an encore of Over My Shoulder and Word Of Mouth once again with audience participation.

Once again, they’ve provided a great night of music. It always helps when there is a great support act before the main one and that has happened once again here. It seemed to be a good turnout although it was only the downstairs area of the venue that was being used. But despite that, all that were there seemed to have a good night. Mike & the gang didn’t stop from the moment that they came on. They seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage and of course if they’re enjoying themselves, then so too are the audience and vice versa. A great night out for what probably nowadays is a very modest ticket price (£25 + booking fees). An act that we would be going back to see again if they’re ever back up this way.

Josh Osho // Redemption Days Feat. Ghostface Killah

Redemption Days is the debut single from south Londoner Josh Osho.

Not many people can translate real life experience into a great song, but that is exactly what Osho does here. Another great little summery tune for the (at present) non-existent British season, Osho’s voice has a beautiful soulful quality to it that express emotion through it. Balanced nicely with string and choir, this is one Brit act to keep an eye on.

Fine By Me is the UK debut single for former US busker Andy Grammer.

It’s a very upbeat song that will have you swaying and clapping your hands along with. Despite the feeling that the track does have a familiar feel to it, at the same time there is something in Grammer’s voice that makes him an individual. Would be a perfect song for the sunshine if we ever see any! Hope to be hearing more from him

Will Young // I Just Want A Lover

I Just Want A Lover is the 4th single to be lifted from the album, Echoes.

To be honest, this probably isn’t going to attract any lovers. It’s more likely to repel than to attract. It’s a feels like a miserable, monotonous monster that never seems to end. But has seemed that since the 1st release from the album Echoes that things have steadily gone down with the singles released from it when there have been a few better choices that could have been made.

We hate to say this but we’re hoping that this might be the last from the album. We don’t know how much more disappointment we can take…

New Music Friday // Charlotte Church

Remember this angelic voice that turned Crazy Chick? Well, it would seem that Charlotte Church is about to unleash some new music back on the scene. The first track we’ve been given is The Rise that she says herself is a song that stretches her vocal range and isn’t really a single as such, but is more an introduction track. You can download the track from the website (which isn’t fully operational yet but it’s coming!)

Cascada // Rhythm Of The Night

51CglHZtBNL._SS500_ Just when we thought that were getting original material from the group from Germany, they go and release this.

You might recognise the title of the track and that would be because it…well cover, doesn’t quiet work and neither does sample….anyway, it features parts of the 90’s track of the same name by Corona. The exception in the Cascada version is that it really only has the chorus and some sort of bridge that hold any familiarity to the original track. The rest of the track is taken up by some rapping (we’re not entirely sure who it is, but he was doing his thing on the Original Me album)

We could probably could have forgiven them if this had been a straight cover. But while it’s not exactly bad, we’re hoping that they not slipping back into old ways after we’ve enjoyed the previous album or original material. We could always hope that this might just be a track being put there to keep them noticed….

Little Mix // Wings

Download @ iTunes | Official Store

it was back in December last year that anything was really heard for the 4 piece after they won The X Factor and went to number 1 with their cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball (see our review here). However, finally they are ready to reveal their next single, Wings.

First point is that the girls co-wrote the track, so we’re already giving a tick to that. After all, it probably wasn’t expected by most. The song itself gives us the feeling of a mix of Christina Aguilera and Beyonce with it’s beats and melody. The harmonies are stronger than previously experienced. Lyrically, it’s another one of these songs that promote the ‘don’t listen to others and do your own thing’ which we seem to have had a few in the past year.

Still, it’s not a bad track. They’ve came out showing that whilst they’ve been quiet (at least on the sort of music front….twitter’s another story!) that they haven’t just been lazing back let others work for them. With Amazon quoting their album as early September, let’s see what else the girls can produce

If we mentioned Newton Faulkner to you, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Gone In The Morning per chance? Well that was what came to mind for us at least.

Clouds is a nice little laid back tune that wouldn’t look out of place being performed by Coldplay or maybe Snow Patrol. It’s maybe not got such a complicated sound to it, but that is probably why it works. A lovely guitar driven track that perfect for the mythical summer season.

Film Review: Men In Black 3

 MV5BMTU2NTYxODcwMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDk1NDY0Nw@@._V1._SX640_SY948_

Can you believe that it’s been 14 years since Men In Black 2? No neither can we. Still, the latest instalment has probably been long awaited. Reuniting Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as Agents J & K, the film sees Smith travelling back in time to 1969 to save the young K (played by Josh Brolin) and ensure that the future doesn’t change.

We managed to see it in 3D and to be fair, it works well. It’s not one of these over the top 3D films that if you were to watch it normally, you recognise that the parts that are meant to be 3D. Of course you can expect the usual twists and turns in the script, and considering how much is squeezed into the 90 minute flick, it’s impressive. Also we have to commend Josh Brolin on his portrayal of young K. A difficult role to fill, but he manages it brilliantly bringing the mannerisms of Jones’ character to a younger version.

If we were asked to order the films as favourites it would probably be MiB, MIB3 then MiB2. Our only complaint….where was Frank the pug?? If you’ve enjoyed the previous ones, then you’ll probably enjoy this as well.
